Volunteer: Art For Social Change - Event Set-up

Positions Requirements: Support artist with the installation of their artwork.

Art for Social Change is a program that uses conceptual art to provide powerful experiences that inspire people to take personal action to create positive change for those facing barriers due to lack of accessibility, inclusion, and other oppressive systems and structures.

This year, seven (7) multidisciplinary artists throughout Canada have been invited to create installations related to the theme of Accessibility. Their artworks will be displayed in a final exhibition at Keyano College, opening on December 3 (International Persons with Disabilities Day) and closing on December 10 (International Human Rights Day) and with personalized tours scheduled daily.

To create artworks that respond to the local experience, artists have been invited to partner with social profit organizations in the region that support people experiencing barriers to access, be it physical, mental, neurological, cultural, or otherwise. The goal of this partnership is not only to bring local context to the artwork, but also to show that support is available and that these organizations are on a journey to find solutions.

[The Art for Social Change program was initiated by the Public Art Committee and the Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity and is brought to you by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in collaboration with Keyano College.]

Volunteer: Community Ambassador Mary's Meals

Deciding to join our movement and become a Community Ambassador, you will be part of a group of passionate volunteers, you will join us as we grow our movement through local groups to motivate and inspire people in your local community to support our work.

As a valued member of the Mary’s Meals family, you will play an active role in raising awareness and promoting our nationwide fundraising campaigns & initiatives.

Our vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education and that all those who have more than they need, share with those who lack even the most basic things. $26.40 is all it costs for us to feed a child for a whole school year. That is only .13 cents a day. Currently, we are feeding over 2 million children a day across 20 countries. Our idea is a simple one that works. We provide one nutritious daily meal in a place of learning in order to attract chronically poor children into the classroom, where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty. Every child deserves an education and enough to eat.

Our work is mainly carried out by our wonderful army of Community Ambassadors who volunteer by contributing in all sorts of different ways. But we’re always in need of more help as the need is great! The more Community Ambassadors we can partner with, the more hungry children we can reach.

We have a range of fulfilling and fun opportunities to help you raise awareness of the work of Mary’s Meals in your local area as a Community Ambassador.

Volunteer: Lead an outdoor program for youth!

Are you passionate about spending time outdoors and on the land? Do you care a lot about taking care of our environment and wildlife? Are you interested in being a mentor and role model for youth in your community? Then this opportunity is for you! The Canadian Wildlife Federation is seeking leaders to bring our WILD Outside program to young people in their home communities across Canada. WILD Outside is a free, low-barrier program for 15- to 18-year-olds that connects them with nature, helps them build a relationship with the land, and gets them giving back to their communities through environmental stewardship projects like removing invasive species, planting native species, restoring damaged areas, monitoring wildlife populations, creating community gardens, etc. WILD Outside helps young adults develop leadership and teamwork skills and explore future employment opportunities. What does your community need? We know that you know best. Work with your group to plan and carry out the projects that will make the most impact locally. DIVERISTY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION: We want our youth participants to see themselves reflected in the adults that lead their program. We want participants to have role models that they can relate to through shared experience. If you belong to an equity-seeking group, we encourage you to apply! What you will get out of volunteering with us: • Participate in fun outdoor activities for free! • Gain skills to add to your résumé • Share your knowledge and skills with others • Meet new people and make connections – both personal and professional • Give back to your community • Be a role model and inspire youth to give back to their community • In some cases, you may even be able to earn certifications like Standard First Aid, WILD Education, or OCC Field Leader training through WILD Outside! • Receive WILD Outside swag! Volunteer: Snow Angel Volunteer

Be an angel. Help your neighbour.

While snow in the driveway is not a fun sight for anyone, for some, it can mean missing out on important medical appointments, not being able to get groceries or seeing loved ones. Community members with mobility challenges need your help this winter to shovel snow from their walkways and driveways. Sign up as a Snow Angel and make sure your neighbour can safely access their home and stay connected to their community.

By joining this program, you will be providing someone the ability to continue living their life uninterrupted.

Volunteer as a Snow Angel

Anyone can volunteer. Our volunteers are made up of students, community members, businesses and non-profit organizations.

To suit your schedule, we’ve created multiple ways to volunteer. After you register, the program coordinator will be in touch to match you with the volunteer opportunity that best suits your availability.

Volunteer as an individual: This option is perfect if you have a set or a flexible schedule with the ability to commit to a home for the winter. If you’re already volunteering as an individual and find this suitable, please continue to volunteer in this manner.

Sign up as a team: This option is perfect for you if you want to help community members, but your schedule makes it difficult. When you sign up as a team, your team will be assigned a house for the winter. This way, team members can share the workload and ensure that a volunteer is available when needed.

What to expect

Snow Angels will shovel the driveway within 48 hours of a snow fall (aligns with municipal by-laws). However, we do encourage every Snow Angel to shovel as soon as possible after a snowfall to ensure residents have access to and from their homes.

Shovels, salt, and ice picks are all provided!
