The Northern Lights Health Foundation’s 9th Annual Hospital Bed Races, presented by Birch Mountain Enterprises LP are a fun and entertaining family event where teams of four race in head-to-head heats while pushing a hospital bed 50 meters, with the fastest team winning the coveted golden bedpan trophy.

As one of the BED RUNNERS, you play a vital role with ensuring the behind the scenes of the races run smoothly. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Collect the beds from a finished race and quickly bring them to the Pit Crew located near the start line (orientation will be provided prior to the start of the shift)

·         Return to the finish line and await the end of the next race

·         Work under direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

*This position requires the volunteer to have some physical stamina as the beds need to be returned quickly in order for the Pit Crew to inspect the beds prior to the start of the next race.

Skills & Qualifications:

·         Ability to push a 150+ lb  hospital bed over 50 meters

·         Ability to stand for an extended period of time

As TEAM REGISTRATION , your role will provide a welcoming atmosphere to all team members who are participating in the event. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Greet and welcome team members as they arrive, providing a positive experience

·         Register that each team member has arrived by “checking” them in on the team tracker

·         Ensure each team member has either previously submitted their race waiver (will be noted on the team tracker) or get them to fill out the waiver at registration

·         Verify all team participants names with each Team Captain

·         Work under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

Skills & Qualifications:

·         Excellent communication

·         Excellent interpersonal skills

·         Excellent organizational skills

·         Ability to sit or stand for an extended period of time

As VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION , your role will provide a welcoming atmosphere to all volunteers who are arriving for their shift. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Greet and welcome volunteers as they arrive, providing a positive experience

·         Sign-in volunteers as they arrive (make note of the time)

·         Confirm volunteers have signed the waiver, if not provide a copy to fill out

·         Introduce them to the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant/NLHF staff member present at the time

·         Ensure they have the proper documents for their required role (ex: clipboard, sheets, pens, etc)

·         Sign-out walkie-talkies to volunteers whose position requires one

·         Sign-in walkie-talkies as they are returned

·         Sign-out volunteers as they leave (make note of the time and tally hours)

·         Work under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

As part of the FLOATER CREW, your role will give breaks to volunteers assigned a certain area. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Greet and welcome participants/viewers to the races

·         Keep track of the teams racing order and answer any questions about the schedule

·         Round up the teams prior to the start of their race

·         Do a walk-around of the beds (check for broken parts, ensure the bed bug is secure, no deficiencies, etc) and report any problems to the volunteer coordinator

·         Hype up the teams and get them excited to race

·         Ensure the race track is free and clear of any debris or hazard prior to the start each race

·         Ensure the audience, teammates, and other viewers are always behind the viewing stanchions

·         Report any hazards on the race track to the Race Starter (as needed)

·         Collect the beds from a finished race and quickly bring them to the Pit Crew located near the start line

·         Work under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

As one of the FOOD STATION ATTENDANTS, your role will ensure that our snacks are properly handled and distributed to the participants and event spectators. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Greeting guests and providing a welcoming atmosphere

·         Hand out packaged food items and drinks

·         Ensure the station remains clean and tidy

·         Work under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

 

Skills and Qualifications:

·         Alberta Food Safety Certificate (not required, but a bonus)

·         Excellent communication skills

·         Ability to be on your feet for an extended period of time

As one of the RAFFLE SALES attendants, your role is vital in ensuring guests are aware of raffle ticket sales. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Greet and invite guests to purchase raffle tickets

·         Advise guests on the cost of the tickets

·         Collect cash payments (make change if needed)

·         Use handheld interact machine (orientation provided) to collect payments

·         Hand out appropriate amount of tickets

·         Ensure guests write their name and phone number on the back of tickets

·         Place half of the tickets in the raffle box

·         Change out interact machine paper roll (if needed, orientation provided)

·         Keep station clean and tidy

·         Work under the direction of the volunteer coordinator/NLHF Staff Member

**Must be 18+ years of age.

As part of the SET-UP CREW, you play a vital role in ensuring our supplies and equipment are safely unloaded and set up in the appropriate area(s) in a timely manner. Some of your duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Assisting with the unloading of gear, equipment, tools and supplies from vehicles

·         Moving gear, equipment, tools and supplies to designated area(s)

·         Various set up activities could include: set up stations (example: registration, photo booth, first aid), placing posters or signage around the venue, setting up fencing, setting tables and chairs, decorating.

·         Tidying up areas

·         Work under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator/Assistant and a NLHF staff member

Skills and qualifications:

·         Ability to lift 25 lbs

·         Bending, lifting, carrying, pushing various items

·         Ability to be on your feet for an extended period of time
